Code of Conduct

National History Day – R-6 Regional Contest

Please know that National History Day is a contest.  Only a few students advance.  While winning should be a goal; it is not the only goal.  Researching, creating, and presenting the best entry possible should be your main goal.

  1. All participants must read and abide by all of the rules in the Contest Rule Book as published by National History Day.  This is available for free online: https://nhd.org/rulebook

  2. No requests for specific judging times, days, or locations will be considered.
  1. All participants agree to appear at the time and place assigned.  NHD in PA requires students to attend Regional and State contests and to be present for judging during the normal judging period.  If unable to attend, the registered student competing in an individual category will have his or her project evaluated but not considered for an award.  Should a registered student competing in a group be unable to attend, the judges will evaluate the project, might penalize a group for absent members, but may still consider the project for an award.  If no members of a group are present, the project will be evaluated but not considered for an award.
  1. You may not tamper with, deface, or alter another student’s or group’s entry.  All rooms and exhibit locations are assigned.  You may not change assigned rooms, locations, or move exhibit tables.
  1. “The decisions of the judges are final.” (National History Day. NHD Contest Rule Book 2020. College Park: 2020. 38.) Loud, offensive, derogatory, or any similar complaint will not be tolerated.  The only acceptable complaints are ones concerning egregious problems and the must be: in writing, after the competition, and must be signed by both the student(s) and the teacher(s) who sponsored the project.  These should be mailed to: Susan Falciani Trexler Memorial Library, Muhlenberg College 2400 W Chew St, Allentown, PA 18104
  1. All contests are held in public areas. You are solely responsible for the security and safety of your own equipment and artifacts. NHD officials, volunteers, and Muhlenberg College, will not be responsible for the loss of, or, damage to: entries, props, equipment, personal belongings, or any similar items.
  1. Students should not include anything which they and/or their teachers deem to be valuable or irreplaceable.
  1. Misuse, damage, or destruction of any property or facilities will result in possible criminal charges and fines.

Violation of any of these rules by anyone may result in the entry or entries being disqualified, the prohibition of future entries, and the immediate removal of the all offending persons.

National History Day is a year-long academic program focused on historical research, interpretation and creative expression for 6th- to 12th-grade students. By participating in NHD, students become writers, filmmakers, web designers, playwrights and artists as they create unique contemporary expressions of history. The experience culminates in a series of contests at the local and affiliate levels and an annual national competition in the nation's capitol in June.

Judges will use NHD Evaluation Forms to evaluate your entry. You are encouraged to use these forms as a guide in developing your project. Then, after the contest, carefully review the judges' feedback. If your project is moving on to a higher competition level, consider ways to strengthen your work. Between contest levels, you may continue your research, refine your analysis, and revise your project, including your title. However, you may not change your topic.

The evaluation form has two sections: Historical Quality (80%) and Clarity of Presentation (20%).

The evaluation of Historical Quality is the same for all categories. This section focuses on the strengths of your historical argument, research, and relationship to the theme. Clarity of Presentation is different for each entry category. It evaluates how well your project communicates your argument using the tools of your category.
